The job

Ikonix needed a backdrop for the 2025 Queensland Training Awards in the Plaza Ballroom at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Our workshop built it 30 m wide with a 5 m drop in black 1 inch FR scenery netting, with white IFR Poly Cyc shapes machine-cut and appliqued to the front so the whole piece works as a projection mapping surface.

The challenge

Ikonix needed a surface that could take projection mapping across a 30 m stage width, with shapes built into it rather than one flat rectangle. The backdrop also had to be flame retardant for a public ballroom, and made to an exact size so it would hang as drawn.

What we did

Our workshop built the base from black 1 inch FR scenery netting, finished with webbing, eyelets and ties so it hangs and tensions across its full width. White IFR Poly Cyc shapes were machine-cut to templates, so each one repeats exactly, then appliqued to the front face. The size came from a dimensioned drawing.

The result

Ikonix received a flame retardant backdrop, built to size, that turns the full stage width into a mapping surface with its shapes already in place. Because the shapes were cut by machine from templates, they are repeatable if the piece is ever touched up or rebuilt. It went up in the Plaza Ballroom for the 2025 awards.
