Step 1 of 5 · The job
In-house manufacturing

Stock drapes hardly fit.
We make sure yours will.

The house curtain is faded. The blacks have tide-marks where someone tried to clean them. The legs are 600mm short of the fly bar and the masking is broken. Off-the-shelf stage curtains will not solve any of it.

We make stage curtains and theatre drapes end-to-end in our in-house Melbourne workshop, the home of Reveal Drapes since 2001. Custom-cut to your venue, in the fabric the application calls for, flame retarded to AS 1530 standards, with the certification supplied. Then we install them, and we maintain them. It is one part of the full Drapes & Accessories range.

The fabric range

Different jobs,
different cloth.

Four cloths do the curtain-and-masking work. Each is the right answer to a different job - here is how to tell them apart, and how to spec the one you need. Many other fabrics are available on request.

What do IFR / DFR / NDFR mean?

FR ratings, defined once: IFR is built into the fibre and is permanent. DFR is a durable treatment that survives wash cycles before retreatment. NDFR is a surface coat that degrades with moisture. We explain the ratings here, and fullness and pleating here.

Velvet / Velour · IFR

The one the audience sees.

The front-of-house cloth: deep nap, full colour, and the weight to hang in clean folds, so it reads as a show before a light moves. Where wool serge is built to disappear, velvet is built to be looked at - spec it for house curtains, valances and swags, not for masking. Inherent grades hold their FR for the life of the fibre; some velours are treated, so we confirm the rating on the colour you pick.

Wool Serge · IFR

The masking that vanishes.

Matte, dense and non-reflective - wool serge soaks up stray light instead of bouncing it back, so legs and borders read as true black from the seats. It's the workhorse where velvet would be wasted: masking, travellers, blacks and hall division. IFR by nature, so the rating never lapses. Heavier than molton, and dry-clean only.

~550gsm·1.8m roll·Legs, borders, blacks, travellers·IFR for life

Turo Molton · NDFR

The value black, three metres wide.

Brushed cotton on a 3.0m roll - the wide width cuts seam count on tall drops and keeps the cost down on black-box, studio and short-life builds. Lighter and lower-cost than wool serge; the trade-off is the FR. It's a surface treatment, so it degrades with moisture and needs a retreat after any wet exposure.

~320gsm·3.0m roll·Studio, temporary, value builds·NDFR, retreat after moisture

RevPro Blockout · DFR

Full blackout, low weight.

Stops light without the bulk - a DFR-treated cloth that kills bleed behind a thinner face fabric, or stands alone as a blackout layer. Choose it over a heavier serge when you need total opacity but not the weight on the bar: tech blackout zones, masking layers and linings. Durably treated, so it survives cleaning cycles before retreatment.

~280gsm·1.5-3.0m roll·Blackout linings, tech zones·DFR, durable

These four cover the curtains and the masking. Cycloramas, scrims, printed backdrops and decorative drops each call for a different cloth - tell the Drape Selector the job and it specs the right fabric, or browse the full soft-goods range. Fabric weights, widths and swatch detail sit with the makers on the Reveal Productions theatre drapes page.

Velvet for FOH house curtains where you want depth, colour and sound absorption. Wool serge is the masking workhorse for legs, borders and blacks. Turo molton is the value pick for temporary or studio use. RevPro blockout is the DFR-treated option for blackout linings and tech masking layers. We specify the right fabric for the application as part of the quote.
IFR (inherently fire-retardant) is built into the fibre and is permanent - velvet and wool serge are IFR. DFR (durable FR) is a chemical treatment that survives a number of wash cycles before retreatment - RevPro blockout sits here. NDFR (non-durable FR) is a surface coat that degrades with water or wear - Turo molton sits here and needs retreatment after any moisture exposure.
Yes. All stage drapes manufactured by TSA are flame retarded to AS 1530 standards. Compliance documentation is supplied with every order.
Yes. Every drape is custom-made to your specification - fly bar width, drop, fullness, heading style and finishing. We work with existing track and rigging, or specify new hardware where the original is end-of-life. See our Tracks & Hardware page for compatible systems.
For IFR fabrics the treatment is permanent. For DFR and NDFR fabrics, retreatment is typically every 2-3 years depending on use, moisture exposure and cleaning history. Any drape that gets wet should be retreated before reuse. TSA's FR Treatment service handles retreatment and certification in the same workshop that built the original.
