Steel rope, piled
on a drum. Not chain.
A pile wind hoist lifts on a steel wire rope that piles onto a single flanged drum - no chain - and the rope feeds straight up the lines. The TSA Electric Pile Wind Hoist packs that drum, the motor, the gearbox and the control into one compact unit that fixes to the wall and stays there.
It is built in Australia for venues, not adapted from an industrial hoist. The 500 kg unit covers flown scenery and heavier bars, on single-phase 230V with soft start and stop - it ramps up to a top speed of around 8 m/min and decelerates to a soft stop, quiet enough for a live room. It is one part of the full Lifting & Rigging range.

Every value here is from the current TSA Pile Hoist data sheet. It is designed, tested and built as a serial hoist to AS1418.2:1997, with the gearbox running below 50% efficiency at low speed so it cannot free-fall and a motor brake rated to arrest 200% of capacity.
The venue workhorse.
The heavier unit for flown scenery and loaded bars. A 5 mm rope on 3 to 7 lines lifts 500 kg over up to 14 m, on a 1.5 kW single-phase motor with soft start and stop. The rope piles onto a single flanged drum for a clean, repeatable wind.
