Load cells are becoming required in many more productions and venues, so to have an EXE rise hoist with a built in load cell is a good way to keep the required headroom to a minimum and get a readout actually on the hoist as well as the monitoring position.

Avoid an Accident by Completing Theatre Risk Assessments

Here’s an example of a theatre accident that was entirely preventable, had a correct risk assessment been carried out for the use of the tallescope at the theatre.

LOCAL AUTHORITY SENTENCED FOR THEATRE WORKER’S INJURIES

A local authority in the West Midlands has been fined £20,000 after a theatre worker fractured a bone in his back.

Stafford Borough Council was sentenced following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the incident, which happened at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre in July 2014.

Two theatre workers were operating a tallescope when the apparatus overturned, injuring 33-year-old Mark Elkin.

Stafford Magistrates’ Court heard that no risk assessment had been carried out for the use of the tallescope at the theatre.

The council admitted breaching Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and Work at Height Regulations 2005. It was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,922.

HSE inspector Katherine Blunt said: “This accident was entirely preventable. This could very easily have been a fatality. As it is, Mr Elkin suffered serious injuries.”
